Definition of a Master Crocheter
There could be as many definitions of "master" as there are crocheters. A Master does not indicate the number of years crocheting nor how many projects have been completed. Rather CGOA uses the term Master for individuals who have completed a portfolio of work according to the following standards:
1
Reads, follows and executes instructions as presented. Although the crocheter may prefer to use different methods, the candidate is to follow the written instructions as given.
2
Creates even, neat stitches, and maintains a standard gauge throughout a swatch.
3
Selects an appropriate hook size for the yarn being used.
4
Weaves in all loose ends of yarn securely and invisibly.
5
Ensures each swatch has the correct number of stitches in each row and the correct number of rows have been worked for each swatch.
6
Does not assume that the first time working a swatch of a new stitch is the swatch to submit. Is able to evaluate the work and takes time to be sure that the very best work is presented. Should be able to find errors prior to finalizing a swatch.
7
Shows understanding of basic crochet principles in answers to questions.
8
Satisfactorily completes all written and crocheted work as given in the program instructions.
9
Presents work in a professional manner that is clean, free of stains, odors, pet hair, etc.
Masters Programs
There are two masters programs:
- Fundamentals of Crochet
- Advanced Stitches & Techniques
The programs may be completed in any order. While there is some overlap between the curriculums, the Masters Committee finds that it is better to complete one program before starting another and strongly recommends that participants finish every step of one program—including submitting the portfolio for review, correcting any errors, and receiving the certificate—before submitting a portfolio for a different curriculum.

Submitting Your Portfolio
When you are ready to have your portfolio reviewed, complete the Masters Candidate form. The Masters Committee will find a reviewer for you to mail your portfolio to.
Non-Passing Portfolios
If your portfolio contains 5 or more unsatisfactory items your portfolio is considered as "Not Passing At This Time" and will be returned to you. Based on the reviewer’s comments, you may rework your portfolio and submit it for a subsequent review. You will need to purchase a 2nd review and submit your portfolio again (request a 2nd review). There is a special timeframe required for re-enrolling. That is, additional reviews are only allowable 1 month to 1 year after previous reviews.
Passing Portfolios
Your portfolio will be returned with a written review of your work and a certificate celebrating your accomplishment. Award pins for each program are mailed to graduates on an annual basis after the CGOA Member Meeting in late summer. Your name will be added to the list of graduates. And this certification will show in the Member Portal to you and other members. Congrats!
